Proper Exercise
When left in their natural surroundings, all animals have their own grooming techniques, to clean themselves and maintain their hygiene and a cat is no exception. In general, cats can be seen spending about one-tenth of the time they are awake, in grooming themselves. We often notice them licking their fur and claws to remove the dirt and insects. Human intervention is required to further improve their cleanliness. This is particularly important for the personal safety of the pet keeper.
Bathing
Cats require regular baths. Depending on the coat color, hair density and cat’s habit, bathing may be as frequent as once a week or once in a month. Cat furniture needs regular cleaning to reduce mold. Cat scratching posts and cat trees also require frequent cleaning.
For a good bath, you would need items such as bathing bowls, warm water, clean towels, good quality brush, shampoo, conditioner and a vacuum cleaner. It is a good practice to cover the ears with cotton balls to avoid water entering the ear. Thorough drying after the bath is required to keep the fur dry and shining.
Trimming of nails
Cat nails require regular trimming. More than the hygienic aspect, this will also help to protect home furniture. It is recommended that cat scratching posts may be placed in areas frequented by the cat, to protect home furniture from getting scratched. A good cat furniture shop can provide a number of useful items such as cat scratching posts and cat trees.
Good cat nail scissors may be used for the purpose of clipping the nails. For trimming the nails, hold the paw in one hand and gently press the toe so that the nail can extend outward. Cut it carefully without causing any damage to the toe. Cats have five toes in the front paws and four in the rear paws and this procedure is to be repeated for all the toes. Cat furniture such as cat trees, with scratching surfaces can help to reduce the frequency of nail trimming.
Eye and ear care:
Eye and ear are prone to infections and require regular cleaning. Good quality cotton soaked in warm saline water can be used for cleaning the eyes. Dry cotton can be used for cleaning ears. Cleaning is to be done gently to avoid any damage to these parts. If any excessive liquid discharge is notice from the eye or ear, this could mean an infection. A veterinary doctor may be consulted for advice in such situations.
Medication
Many chemicals which are harmless to human beings and dogs can be fatal to cats. Even common painkillers such as paracetamol are very toxic to cats. Surprisingly, a few varieties of chocolates can result in the death of a cat. It is absolutely necessary to consult a veterinary doctor before administering any medicine.
If it is necessary to use disinfectants for cleaning popular cat furniture such as cat trees and cat scratching posts, expert advice may be sought to avoid any toxic effects on cats.
